M. V. KELDYSH INSTITUTE OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS OF RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Russian Academy of Sciences M. V. Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics was esta blished in 1953 to address complex mathematical problems related to space research pro grammes and the development of nuclear and thermonuclear energy by creating and pro moting the use of computer technology and software. M. V. Keldysh, President of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was the Institutes organizer and first director from 1953 to 1978.

From the very beginning, the Institute was concerned with major applied problems and fundamental scientific research in areas like mathematics, mechanics, cybernetics and information technology. The Institute has four academicians, five corresponding mem bers of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 74 doctors and 224 candidates of sciences. They include 14 Lenin Prize winners and 30 State Prize winners. Yu. P. Popov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, currently heads the Institute.

In the last few years, the Institute has conducted uniquely complex and extensive ana lyses of explosion gas dynamics, defence against penetrating radiation and the supersonic 124 SUMMARY SUMMARY :
