SUMMARY 1. Tapiroidea primitive superfamily of suborder Ceratomorpha were wide distributed in , Asia and North America in Early Tertiary. The superfa mily mostly numerous and approached the great variety in Asia 'during 2. In Helaletidae, Lophia1etidae and Tapiridae one can see the paraIlelism in skull Eocene. There were nineteen genera of the four families. Two of the families.

Lophialetidae and Deperetellidae were endemics.

evolution - nose bones schranked, nasal incisions enlarged, fossa praeorbitalis.

displaced above the orbits.

3. The dentition in Tapiroidea evolved in two general lines. . The approaching of bilophodonty (in Helaletidae, Deperetellidae and Tapiridae).

. forming of lophodonty (rhinoceroslike type) (in Lophia1etidae and Lopho dti).

The increasing of mastificatary surface in the group , approached moraH zation of premolars. Shearing against upper and lower teeth was mainly along cross crests. In the group the increasing of the mastificatary' surface approa Breviodon, in wich 1, 1 - 2 10st). Shearing against upper and lower teeth was ched elongation of the molars row, while premolars reduced (especially in mainly along ectoloph (especially in Rhodopaginae), 4. Some of as iat ic Tapiroidea possessed the cursorial adaptation as result of their invasion in open spaces. So, in Lophialetidae, Deperetellidae ans Colodontine Helaletidae (11 forms of cursorial type) - the elongation of extremities ad.

reduction of toes was approached independantly.

5. The chages wich took place in construct ion of skull, dentition and extremities in Lophialetidae, Deperete1lidae, Helaletidae and Tapiridae indicated that in some aspects these groups underwent parallel evolutian.

6. Some features of skull and hind 1 imbs in the most primitive tapiroids (0 galax and Heptodon) inMcated that Hyracotherium could not the ancestor for Tapiroidea'. Evidently, Hyracotheriidae and the most primitive Tapiroidea 11ad cQmmon ancestor, but later tha in Upper Paleocene both groups dif ferentiated.

7. Tapiroidea of Homogalax group represents the morphological type for the whole superfamily.

The most primitive Tapiroides were fined in Early Eocene deposits of North 8.

America and Asia. EVidently the main Tapiroid families formed later then in Early Eocene.

9. The great variety of Tapiroidea in Eocene of Central Asia, partly explai ned if take in account almost complete absence of Ruminantia in this region during Early and Middle . Poss ibly Tapiroids were ecological vicariates of Ruminant Artiodactyls in that t ime.

10. The disapearing of Tapiroidea in the end of Eocene explaned as result of distribut ion of Ruminants and Rhinoceratoids.

Lophialetidae and Deperete11idae were the most distributed families in Eocene.

1 1.

The most of them represented genera of cursorial type. This fact indicated wide distribution of opeh ladshafts in Eocene of Central Asia.

12. Some of cursorial tapiroids, such as Lophialetes expeditus, which lived in semiarid biotops, possibly congregated in heards.

13. Early Tertiary Tapiroidea pos, sessed high tempo of evolution, that is why the period of living of their genera used as marker for Stratigraphy of of Asia.

14. The most typica! forms for Early Eocene of Central Asia were Homogalax ( Isec tolophidae) and Heptodon (Helaletidae). They were also d istributed in Early Eocene in North America ( Wasatch).

15. If.we compare Eocene continental deposi!s if Central Asia with marine deposits in Andarak region (USSR, Kirgisia) and also use the absolute datings from basalts, which underlies the bone bearing beds in Toru-Aigir region (USSR, also Kirgisia) we wi1l able to date more exactly the age of centralasiatic ffianlffialian assemblages. We estab lished their age as Midd{e Eocene. The most typica! forms for that t ime were genera Isectolophus (Localities Obaila, Kholoba lochi) Hela1etes (Obaila, Irdin-Manga, Ulan-Shireh), Shlosseria, Eo1etes, Lophia letes (Irdin-Manga, Ulan-Shireh, haitchin-ula 11, , holobo1chi Chinja1i), Rho dopagus, Pataecops, Breviodon (Obaila, Andarak 11, Khaitchin-u1a 11, Ko10bo1chi, Irdin-Manga). Hela1etes and Isectolophus 180 distributed in the Middle of North America ( Bridger).

America (Dushesni, Uinta). The extinction of tapiroidea begun in that t ime.

Colodon (Helaletidae) and Deperetella (Deperetellidae) were typical forms for 16.

Latest Eocene of Asia. Colodon was also derived from Latest Eocene of North 17. C'olodon (Helaletidae) and Teleo1ophus ( Deperetel1i.dae) existed in Early 0ligo cene ln Asia.. Co10don was also distributed in Early 01igocene of North America (Chadronian).

On1y Colodon orienta1is Borissiak survived in M iddle Oligocene in Central 18.

Asia.
